One way the WT makes financial gain is through being the beneficiary of trusts. This trust generated approximately $3.6 million in 1998 and $1.6 million in 2000 (the two years for which IRS form 990 is available for download). The vast majority of this income is described as "oil and gas royalties". There are also some stock trade gains in safe companies such as Exxon, Coca Cola and Procter & Gamble (presumably now demon-free).
This is the only example of a WT benefitting trust I've been able to find. So far. NPO disclosure is still haphazard in the US, so hopefully more info. will be available soon.
