HOW ABOUT MENTIONING JESUS AT THE MEMORIAL!

Well I went last night...........Did anyone else notice how the talk focused almost exclusively on the 144,000??? Jesus was barely mentioned. The first couple of minutes talked about when the Israelites left Egypt and the Passover was instituted. Fast-forward to Nissan 14 and the Last Supper. Two verses were read. The talk then shifted to the 144,000 in Revelation and how they were chosen back in Jesus' time up until the "mid 1930s". More scriptures read about their going to heaven, how their spirit "bears witness" with God's Spirit, how the "know" they have the heavenly hope, etc. etc. etc. Then the subject shifted to everyone else and the "earthly hope", reading from Isaiah and Psalms.

Then the inevitable John 3:16 where it talkes about "exercising faith" with HUGE emphasis on the word "exercising" and how this can ONLY be done through Jehovah's Witnesses. He compared it to physical exercise which I thought interesting because with that sort of logic, it would mean that there was ONLY ONE right gym in the whole world where you could get the correct exercise; all others gyms were WRONG, WRONG, WRONG and you will surely die if you go to them!!

They then passed the bread and wine around and that was that. Absolutely NO reading of the actual Last Supper, Judas' betrayal, Jesus praying in the Garden of Gethsamine, His arrest, trial and executiion----NOTHING!!! I specifically remember years ago that ALL of these things were the topic at the Memorial, as that is supposed to be what the event is about. While the 144,000 has always been mentioned, it NEVER used to be the frigging main theme! I was particularly disgusted last night. Jesus died for us, it's the one time of the year at the Hall where the focus should be exclusively on HIM, and he's barely mentioned!!

Did anyone else who went notice this?

I didn't think of that, Mary. Of course, I don't spend much time thinking of dub things these days.

But Jesus is recorded saying to do the Last Supper as a commemoration of his death, which would mean some discussion of what they were supposed to be commemorating.

    Very strange. Thanks.

    Luke 22:17-19:

17 After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, "Take this and divide it among you. 18 For I tell you I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes."
19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me."

What with all the passion for the passion movie going around, they wouldn't want to follow this worldly trend, now would they? Maybe jesus is a bit too worldly for them. Not that i'm a christian, but still, it's easy to see who follows the spirit of it.

Then, if you read about it in 1 Corinthians (I think), It says to keep doing it in memory of him, until he returns. Now, since Jesus returned in 1914, why the @#$% are the JWs still celebrating the memorial? Invisibility is out of the question!

Mary, it certainly mirrors the lack of attention Jesus gets in their publications.

I agree completely.......shows how dumb their "invisibility cloak" really is. However, if you ask an elder this question, he'll look as though you just punched him in the face and then he'll splutter "well, it's talking about when Jesus returns at Armageddon." How convenient eh?

So Mary, you see it's much worse than ``same old, same old" in dubland; your experience squares with mine in that the quality/spiritual content of these talks has deteriorated wiht each passing year. It's not uncommon now for a public speaker to drone on for a full hour without once mentioning Jesus.

If the present trend continues, one of these WTBTS robots is likely to achieve what one would have once thought an impossibility..... a Christ-less Memorial talk!

    Mary,

You paid better attention than I did. And you must have been at the same memorial I went to, because it sounded just as you said. Reflecting on it now, you're correct, it was a talk on mostly the 144,000. I figured that they were just trying to make sure no one, who wasn't supposed to, did try to partake.

It's sad that at the one "celebration" commanded by Jesus that the JWs follow, they spend more time on their "anointed" class and how special they are over everyone else and worry about how many partake.
