You are subject to them, but they sure as hell don't consider themselves servants to you.
To add to our story. After the aforementioned incident, our son went in for minor surgery to have his adnoids and tonsils removed. Even though CJ and I had faded, I still felt responsible to Jehovah, and dutifully filled out the "No Blood" forms. I also spoke privately with the Aniethiseologist (sp)? to make sure he understood our beliefs. He was very cold, angry actually, and gave me quite a rough time over it. He actually scared me, and I remember standing by myself in the hallway as my son was wheeled into the OR, feeling so, so alone and frightened, like a little boy, lost in the big department store who cannot find his mommy.
Surgery went fine. Some time after, the elders came by for a "shepherding" call, and during the small talk, I relayed the story about the episode at the hospital, and the rough time I received over the blood issue. Elder #1 sheepishly turned to me and replied " You do know David, that because of your inactive status, if you did run into complications with blood at the hospital, we would not be able to go to the hospital and intercede on your behalf. All we would be permitted to do is give you advice over the phone."
I asked them to leave.
