i have a number of things to say about this wacky 45min school session.

why is it that it is inappropriate for the conductor to ever simply say that an answer is 'wrong'? invariably, he must ask for 'another answer,' particularly amusing during the true & false when there is only one other answer. shouldnt we be helped to reason on why someone might incorrectly come to this conclusion but why, in fact, this other conclusion is the 'correct' one? that brings me to my second point.

why is the answer and the reasoning behind it never discussed beyond reading the printed answer in the answer sheet, itself simply a quote from the source material? wouldnt it be beneficial to exercise the mind a bit and see if we can remember not simply what the 'correct' answer is, but why?

why are the fill in the blank questions so incredibly vague?? they tend to follow the style of 'Christians should be ____ and ____ and never ____ in matters of dress and grooming' - these questions completely destroy any pretense of a test of reasoning--not even reasoning but even of a test of knowledge or memory. what are you testing here?? you are testing the ability to look up the source material and find the sentence that matches the grammar and locate the missing words - thats a WORDSEARCH! a KIDS GAME!! the message is there is no need to reason on a question or think about it. doing so could yield several different 'correct' answers, all of which will elicit a 'could i have aNOTHER answer?' from the conductor. no, you need but look in the WT source material and copy out the correct answer, THAT is the true test of good JW.

maybe some conductors do this review better than others but this applies to most i have seen.

ps, some of these questions are so vague, you can entertain yourself putting other possible words in them. one i rememer was 'brothers should not ______ on the platform' - go wild with that :)

You're right...there always seemed to be only a limited amount of time to get through all the answers so there was no room for discussion to 'exercise our minds' as you said. The only exercise our minds got was to memorize things not reason on them.

I remember (man, am I dating myself) when the written reviews were all handed in and the school overseer marked them and graded them a percentage. I even helped my dad sometimes by adding up the scores. Then they were returned to the publishers the next week for review.

Later on when we marked our own, I got lax and just flubbed some of the answers just to look like I had something in the blank. I wish now I would have had some of my teen friends sitting beside me then, instead of my elder (ex)-husband. I would have been much more fun.

LOL, moxy!! i hadn't thought about written reviews for a while. i always found them to be odd as well. the section at the end where you match the scripture to the paraphrased text, what was that all about? an exercise in flipping through the bible? quite pointless, IMO. thanks for bringing back the memories, they are always good for a laugh.:)-nate

    Had enough:

We used to score our written reviews this way:

    0 wrong.....Annointed
    1-3 wrong....Special Pioneer
    4-6 wrong....Regular Pioneer
    7-9 wrong....publisher
    10-12 wrong...DA'd/DF'd
    12+ wrong.... Apostate!! (you're screwed!)

My parents really weren't too happy when they noticed what we (us kids) were doing with our written reviews! Believe me, this provided for a lot of fun every time. And, of course, the really fun part is when you can give an answer that's totally irrelevant, and watch how the conductor tries to fit it in...I remember making a tongue-in-cheek comment that was meant for a particular elder...it was so hilarious, everyone who knew this guy was rolling on the floor laughing!
