Here are some sayings about fanatics and fanatacism. Feel free to add quotes, whiticisms or zingers.

    FANATICS

"Wisdom becomes nonsense in the mouth of a fanatic."

    (Otto Schuwdrmer)

"A fanatic is one who can't change his mind and won't change the subject."

    (Winston S. Churchill, 1874-1965)

"A fanatic is a man who consciously over compensates a secret doubt."

    (Aldous Huxley)

"A fanatic is a man that does what he thinks the Lord would do if He knew the facts of the case."

    (Finley Peter Dunne)

"The fanatic is incorruptible: if he kills for an idea, he can just as well get himself killed for one; in either case, tyrant or martyr, he is a monster."

    (E. M. Cioran)

    FANATICISM

"In the history of mankind, fanaticism has caused more harm than vice."

    (Louis Kronenberger)

"Fanaticism consists in redoubling your effort when you have forgotten your aim."

    (George Santayana)

This totally fit me as I was falling away from "the org.". I was trying so hard to assure myself and defend the religion, that I didn't sense what I was really feeling: doubt. Sad, but true.

The fanatic is not really a stickler to principle. He embraces a cause not primarily because of its justness or holiness but because of his desperate need for something to hold onto.

Though they seem at opposite poles, fanatics of all kinds are actually crowded together at one end. It is the fanatic and the moderate who are poles apart and never meet.

A doctrine insulates the devout not only against the realities around them but also against their own selves. The fanatical believer is not conscious of his envy, malice, pettiness and dishonesty. There is a wall of words between his consciousness and his real self.

    Dan,

This one really fits the jw community:

***A doctrine insulates the devout not only against the realities around them but also against their own selves. The fanatical believer is not conscious of his envy, malice, pettiness and dishonesty. There is a wall of words between his consciousness and his real self. ***

They create a literal 'wall of China' of words to butress thier teachings. Then when confronted with evidence that there are cracks in the wall, they, like the little dutchboy, stick fingers in thier ears, trying to thwart the flood of doubts each and everyone of them have.

Fanatic is to kind a word to describe the idiocy. "The Truth".........what a little mind twister this favorite mantra is. A simple pill to adminster, whenever thier faced with reality, or nagging unanswered questions.

    Here is my favorite:

"You are never dedicated to something you have complete confidence in. No one is fanatically shouting that the sun is going to rise tomorrow. They know it's going to rise tomorrow. When people are fanatically dedicated to political or religious faiths or any other kind of dogmas or goals, it's always because these dogmas and goals are in doubt."

Thanks guys for those comments. Farkel, for an original one.

6o'9, Does that translate to the attic fan blows on me? Pardon my french, it's only rudimentary.

These comments on fanatacism show the total lack of need for any wave of gospel preaching to pass over the earth, or evangelism of any kind. Eastern gurus encourage skepticism. To set free their students, they punch holes in or knock down their preconceptions, if they are incorrect. Truth generally remains standing.
