Cognitive Dissonance 101, Bethel Style

Do you remember these two gems of spiritual insight?

``At times explanations given by Jehovah's visible organization have shown adjustments, seemingly to previous points of view. But this has not actually been the case. This might be compared to what is known in navigational circles as "tacking." By maneuvering the sails the sailors can cause a ship to go from right to left, back and forth, but all the time making progress toward their destination ... -- The Watchtower December 1, 1981, page 27

    Then, ten years later:

``Seeing the strenuous efforts needed to succeed in the race for life, Paul went on to say: "Therefore, the way I am running is not uncertainly" (1 Corinthians 9:26) ...Hence, to run "not uncertainly" means that to every observer it should be very evident where the runner is heading. The Anchor Bible renders it "not on a zigzag course." If you saw a set of footprints that meanders up and down the beach, circles around now and then, and even goes backward at times, you would hardly think the person was running at all, let alone that he had any idea where he was heading. But if you saw a set of footprints that form a long, straight line, each footprint ahead of the previous one and all evenly spaced, you would conclude that the footprints belong to one who knows exactly where he is going. -- The Watchtower, August 1, 1992, p. 17

Note: The first (1981) article was accompanied by an illustration of a boat tacking in --you guessed it-- a ``zigzag'' pattern!

And to think we hung on these guys' every word! How could be have been so dumb?

    Room 215,

    Old bullshit:

"By maneuvering the sails the sailors can cause a ship to go from right to left, back and forth"

    Replaced with brand NEW bullshit:

"Hence, to run "not uncertainly" means that to every observer it should be very evident where the runner is heading. The Anchor Bible renders it "not on a zigzag course"

When it comes to pure bullshit, the Watchtower Printing Corporation has no peers! However, in all fairness I must say the WTS IS consistent: it's ALL bullshit when it comes from them!

    Old Light:

    Zig-Zag

    New Light:

    No Zig-Zag

It's about time for the new light to revert to the old light again, if we know anything about the WT light

How could [we] have been so dumb?

Rarely has a day passed since my separation from the organization some 14 months ago wherein I have not found myself asking myself "what the hell was I thinking???" And so, reviewing excerpts from these articles I recall so vividly affords me this day's "what the hell..." moment.

Interestingly, I recall specifically the article on "tacking" and how my eyes spun around in their sockets like pin balls at the absurdity and transparency of the argument---none of it was even feebly based scripturally. The accompanying picture was just plain comical, to say nothing of insulting. Yet, there I sat, in that WT study along with everyone else---and continued to sit some additional 20 (!) years (was this article really that long ago???) . Sadly, I wanted so desperately for it to be "the truth."

Thanks for the recollect---I never connected the extreme contradiction between those two articles, spaced, as they were, over a decade apart. The second one makes the first even more insulting, if that's possible. It's appalling the contempt in which the Society's leadership holds its flock and the childlike manner in which they are willing to follow those they sincerely believe to be Christ's "faithful and discreet slave."

    G'day Roomie,

I guess this explains why it's difficult to tie down a dub in an argument; they present a 'moving target'.

Good research, thanks. I'd missed that one, and to think I thought I had deeply 'studied' all my Towers!

Cheers, Ozzie (enlightened about 'the Troof' class)

LOL...Maybe someone's smokin' somethin' rolled in zig-zags that's making them write all this contradictory crap.

No, CoonDawg, can't be, if they were smokin something in zigzags they would be a whole lot cooler and more hip than they are...no, they're just terminally clueless and wandering around aimlessly.

can anyone define cognitive dissonance in 30 words or less?...

  • outcast
    outcast

Cognitive dissonance is based on the principle that people prefer their cognitions, or beliefs, to be consistent with each other and with their own behavior.

Inconsistency, or dissonance, among their own ideas makes people uneasy enough to alter these ideas so that they will agree with each other.

Sorry, just couldn't do it under 30 words or less.
