  Put your torches down, it's just a play on words!

  A post over on h20 got me looking at the different translations of this verse.

  Take a look (vs' 52 & 53 on the first one, just 53 thereafter)

  Matt. 27:52,53

  KJV

  And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, 53 And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.

  Websters

  And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared to many.

  Youngs

  and having come forth out of the tombs after his rising, they went into the holy city, and appeared to many.

  Darby’s

  and going out of the tombs after his arising, entered into the holy city and appeared unto many.

  (and persons, coming out from among the memorial tombs after his being raised up, entered into the holy city,) and they became visible to many people.

  I don't know what the heck those parenthesis are for, but obviously the translators seem to feel that hey, if you don't feel comfortable with the way a simple, straightforward translation comes out--change it!

  ...and what's with "memorial" tombs in the NWT? Is there an extra greek word in the translations that the WTS found and none of the other translators could find? It just shows the doctrinal slant the WTS puts on the scriptures. Something about adding words to the bible that just isn't right. Or am I wrong? Is there a word for "memorial" in the old texts?

  This is another example of the convoluted way F. Franz translated his Bible.
  Memorial Tomb instead of grave, Holy Ones instead of Saints, Torture Stake instead of Stake, etc…

  What is even more ridiculous is the interpretation we give this account.
  What it so plainly says, that these holy ones were "raised up" and entered into the city and appeared to many - it means just that. They came to life, resurrected. Note it was just the holy ones, and they came into the city.

  We twist and mangle this account with a ludicrous explanation by saying that their dead bodies were flung out of their tombs, and then these bodies proceeded to roll down the hill into the city where they were noticed. They don’t really explain why it was just the ‘holy ones’ that happened to fall out. Luck I guess. Oh wait, shouldn’t say luck. Fortuitous.

  Unbelievable. All these yaers I thought I was reading the holy word of God - and it was just the ramblings of some guy on a translation-trip.
