Ring the bell that still can ring.

    Forget your "perfect" offering.

There is a crack, a crack in everything.

That's how the light gets in...

There was a documentary/interview on The Sundance Channel a couple days ago about Leonard Cohen, the brilliant poet/songwriter (title: Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man). One of the last songs in the film was "Anthem." here it is, complete:

    ANTHEM - Leonard Cohen

The birds they sang, at the break of day
"Start again," I heard them say
"Don’t dwell on what has passed away
Or what is yet to be."

Yeah, the wars they will be fought again
The holy dove she will be caught again
    Bought, sold, and bought again
    The dove is never free.

Ring the bell that still can ring
    Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That’s how the light get in.

We asked for signs, the signs were sentThe birth betrayed, the marriage spent
Yeah, the widowhood of every government
    Signs for all to see.

I can’t run no more with that lawless crowd
While the killers in high places
Say their prayers out loudBut they've summoned up a thundercloud
    They’re gonna hear from me.

Ring the bell that still can ring
    Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That’s how the light get in.

You can add up the parts, you won’t have the sum
You can strike up the march, there is no drum.
Every heart, every heart to love will come, but like a refugee.

Ring the bell that still can ring
    Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That’s how the light get in.

You can hear Leonard sing it here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=tjtE2-dLjSs

Here is the song performed in the movie: http://youtube.com/watch?v=_dIv2MXU7_4

I think it is a wonderful poetic work, and I dedicate it here to XJWs everywhere.

One of my all-time faves. The song, the singer/songwriter... and the philosophy.

    Thanks.
