NEW YORK CITY -- Police are warning security directors at New York City buildings to take extra precautions because there is new intelligence that the al-Qaida terrorist network plans to attack the city.

The warning, announced Saturday night, gave no specific details about how the attacks might be carried out or when they would occur.

But at least one broadcast news network, citing anonymous sources, reported that al-Qaida plans to send terrorists across the Mexican border into the United States, and that suicide attacks are being planned in the city.

The city's alert level remains at "orange," the second-highest point on the five-step terror alert program.

The city has stayed at that level since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge was expected to visit the city Sunday, but his agenda was not disclosed.
