An Apostate Myth

    Having read both of Ray Franz' books and more recently 'The Gentile Times Reconsidered' by C. O Jonsson you'd be forgiven for believing that losing the 607 B.C.E date for the destruction of Jerusalem would end in disaster for the Society. Sorry but I just don't think so.

    I'm sure many of the long-time Witnesses who know the history of the Society would truly have problems but most of the dubs just don't care! Think about it, remember all those dubs you used to hang out with. When did you ever discuss Russell, Rutherford or the choronology of the neo Babylonian period. Nah! You just went to the meetings, did your bit of field service and then made plans for the weekend or the next party (get-together).

    The Society could adopt the 587/6 date and 95% of the dubs would not even think twice about it. There might be some questions floating around, some undoubtedly would leave while others would remain and 'ripple the waters' for a while but in the end everyone would just end up back in their cult-induced stupor.

    The key is this - who gets there first. If the Society tackle the 607 - 587 issue first then they are in control and can spin it any way they like ( remember 1874, 1914 1925 and "the generation"). They will win because they are perceived to be teaching with authority. However, on a one-to-one basis, exposing fallacies like 607 can still work because it helps to break that very same authority!

    The moral of the story? Act now!

    You're right in that the Society could get away with changing the date. Hell, they've changed everything else, including the dates, so why not one more?

    On the other hand, they really don't need to make the change. Yes, the date is wrong, but so is just about everything else they say. It's not like the generation doctrine which wheezed its way to an overdue death. 607 has always been wrong.

    Now, if they wanted to change it, here's how. First come up with an alternate method of calculating 1914. Use it to fortify the modern chronology. Then gradually switch emphasis from the old calculation to the new, while still officially retaining 607 - just let it lie dormant. Wait a hundred years. Officially change 607 to 587, but by then it won't matter.

    Whether we want to admit it or not, Witnesses are not as date/chronology oriented as they were in the past. Most witnesses don't care about the dates anymore. They simply go to church at the KH and do whatever it akes to keep them in their little church social club. If they really cared about mistaken prophesying bt the Society, they would've left in droves after they changed that generation that saw 1914 malarkey.

    I know, I know!!! Why not use the inside passageway measurement of the Great Pyramid?

    Oh wait a minute - they already have tried that. Rats!!!!

    Welcome 81eagle.

    dub= short form of JW

    borg = reference to part-machine-part-human race in StarTrek, who are all so plugged into each other that thinking for themselves is not possible.

    You may want to take a look at some of the older posts! :)

    That's what I've found. I spoke to several JWs about the 607 date, and not one gave a damn!

    It's probably just a social club for a lot of them.

    If dates or doctrine get to hot to prove, they only have to wait for the "true light" revealed in the "book of Brian chap2 verse 6" with the release of "The Newer World Translation of the Holy Scriptures" - 2007.

    Walter, probably nothin'..........it is. Most are not interested in bucking status quo.....they are just struggling to keep up, to be part of, so they don't get ostracized.
