Any who have checked out Snopes.com, know that it is a very effective baloney detection device. It is amazing how many phoney stories end up coming some so many credible sources.

For the dubs, the urban legend serves an important function of protecting and bolstering their faith. Wouldn't it be handy to have a jw snopes type web site that tells you the origin, veracity, and function of ALL the known jw urban legends.

This is one of those, "here is a good idea that I am to lazy and/or to busy to do, so I hope someone else does it" type threads.

    greatidea!

I have a website and I'd be happy to put it up there.

I don't have the time to devote to doing it all by myself, so if people will submit rumors with verifiable sources refuting their veracity, I'll do it!! I also have only old stories to share since I've been outta the borg for so long.

Ideas that I can think of from my dub years:

    • smurfs being demonized
    • milky ways having blood
    • sun/moon symbols of satanic rituals by a soap manufacturer

Edited: Looks like this has already been done by Randy.

Why do you care what other people do in their free time?

Do you visit other forums and tell them what do do in their free time?

By urban legends do you mean the ones that they love to use at conventions?

You know, the ones describing how dubs in third world countries swim across crocodile infested waters, hack their way through a jungle and climb a mountain all to get to their meeting?

I used to hate these stories. Not because I don't believe there is a grain of truth to them (there might well be). But because they leave out a very important fact which separates us in the western world from a third world country. TIME! We are much more enslaved here with regard to our jobs, etc. For example, somebody in third world country might have a little garden they grow their vegetables on and they have their cattle - but they probably don't have to be at a 9 to 5 job! So, therefore, if they want to travel three days on foot to get to their convention they can do so - and take three days to get back, etc.

While I do appreciate their sacrifice and love I feel there is no comparison to somebody living in the western world.

LMAO! This has got to be the funniest one!

    Hi Randy,

There was a story going around years ago about a Sister who lived in Tennessee, worked the night shift, and walked through a cemetery as a short cut to work. One night, she encountered a "worldly" woman who approached her and asked the sister if she'd escort her through the cemetery, since she was afraid of walking through it alone after dark. The sister replied "Why yes, I'll be happy to walk with you. You know, I used to be afraid of cemeteries too, when I was a part of the world." Whereupon the "worldly" woman fainted unconscious to the ground.

    Cheers...
    JIM

Yes, I would include those. Any story that is popular among dubs because it either validates their dream that they are in "the one true" religion, or one that appears to refute any realization that might invalidate that dream.

I heard so many of them when I first studied with them. My urban legend light didn't go off for some reason. Then I heard someone here mention all of the jw urban legends, and the light came on. Now My urban legend detector is highly tuned.... thus my post.

I think my favorite are all the "demonized smurf" stories. I think those are kind of outdated, or at least not very well known among newer dubs.

Maybe I will get my kid a smurf, and then wait a few months for an older dub to spot it and freak out. It should make for a good show.

I did check out this site http://www.freeminds.org/stories/urbanlore.htm

It had some urban legends, but others were more along the lines of "funny things that happened when I was a dub".

For example one of the urban legends I heard when I was first studying, was about this gang member who became a dub, and then turned himself in for all these murders. When he was in prison he ran into some rival gang member and told him he couldn't fight with him because he was a dub now. The rival gang member told him not to worry. He was a dub to. Hugs.

Or another one I keep hearing from all these dubs, is how they personally were studying with a minister who admitted that he wasn't teaching wasn't the truth. But he couldn't quit because his church would fail and this was his liveyhood. Alas, he cared more for money than serving God. See, all other churches are apart of Satan's org! They even know it isn't true!
