Isn't picking up a lottery ticket and taking the winnings, something for nothing in the scence(sp?) that you haven't paid for the ticket, but have profited by what you haven't paid for.

Should TRUE CHRISTIANs(TM) look for something for nothing?

If my grandmother (never a JW) ever wins the lottery, my mother (JW) would be quite happy to take a cut of the winnings. If I win however she would refuse because I "know better".

That's okay. You can give your mom's share to me.

Gumby said: "Why do witnesses go to the state fair or local carnival.....and pay $1 to see if they can knock down 3 bottle so they can maybe win a big stuffed teddy bear? They pay money for the CHANCE they might win. Most lose as do those who play the slot machines or buy a lottery ticket.....no difference.

You could get disfellowshipped for losing 20 bucks in a casino or buying lotto tickets, yet throw darts at the carnival with your elder buddy tryin to win a big teddy bear with a big beer in your hand, and no problem. Go figure."

That is because carnival games are based on skill. Throwing darts or balls is a skill, not a chance.

I don't see how and why any of that would be DFing offense. As long as the person is not irresponsbile or addicted. One can blow $20 or $50 anywhere, but why is it considered more bad to do so at a casino?

Rattigan, as one of the earlier posters said...they've twisted scripture (shocking, I know) about the god of good luck to keep jdubs in line and to keep the giant wts coffers filled to the brim. The entire "no gambling" thing is to keep the money flowing in their direction.

Can anyone imagine a jdub winning the lottery and actually not leaving the bOrg?

That always bothered me about repeating the phrase of the god of good luck. What they did back then for luck is not the same as today. Just throwing out phrases because it is in the Bible. Not a good reason to avoid something.

What the Watchtower is concerned with is the newspaper story: JEHOVAH'S WITNESS WINS LOTTO!

All the things a JW winner might say to make an ass of the religion are too enormous to allow.

It's about publicity the GB can't control. Questions about charity, giving, donations, etc. are deadly.

By Watchtower standards, that's the same as prohibiting the purchase of a cross but allowing dubs to accept these as gifts.
