[email protected] Reporter covering this story Gainesville typically becomes a ghost town on Memorial Day weekend, but a Jehovah's Witnesses district convention starting today will draw about 8,000 visitors to the area.

The district convention is being held for the second year in a row at the O'Connell Center on the University of Florida campus and is entitled: "Deliverance at Hand!"

Delegates from North Central Florida, Jacksonville and parts of South Georgia will spend the weekend reflecting on "God's promised deliverance from this wicked system," according to pamphlets advertising the convention.

Witnesses believe that current events are a sign indicating that a "day of reckoning," or Armageddon, will bring an end to all "wickedness, crime and oppression," according to pamphlets advertising the convention.

Tony Fowler, an elder at the Micanopy Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, said the convention gives believers and others an opportunity to explore and reflect on the Bible's teachings.

"Our main message is that we want people to take time to take the knowledge of the Bible and apply it in their lives," Fowler said. "Then they'll have happier family lives, and happier lives in general, and the hope of everlasting life."

The three-day convention is considered a boon for the local economy, which normally sees a dip as college students and many residents make an out-of-town exodus for the holiday weekend, said Roland Loog, director of the Alachua County Visitors and Convention Bureau. Earlier this week, about 1,700 of the county's 4,500 hotel and motel rooms were booked by people attending the convention, Loog said.

"For us, it's a great reversal to turn a slow time into a busy time," Loog said. "They're not afraid to pick holiday dates, which are usually dead times around here. We're very pleased about it."

This is the second consecutive year the convention has been held in Gainesville .

Another convention is scheduled for June 30 to July 2. Both weekends are expected to pump roughly $2.1 million into the local economy, Loog said.

With the influx of visitors attending the convention today, traffic is expected to be worse between 8:30 a.m. and noon, organizers said. Fowler suggested that motorists try to avoid W. University Avenue near the UF campus - especially between SW 13th Street and SW 34th Street.

The convention is one of 266 gatherings in 73 cities throughout the United States, all of which are open to the public, according to organizers.

Fowler said Gainesville 's central location for delegates and the O'Connell Center's spacious facilities led organizers to host the convention here.

Starting today at 9:30 a.m., the convention will kickoff with Bible's Scriptures study and a keynote address on "everlasting deliverance."

On Saturday, there will be additional sessions related to the theme, followed by the ordination of new members.

The convention will culminate Sunday with the theme, "Know That the Kingdom of God Is Near," and a costumed drama stressing loyalty to God. Witnesses here visiting homes before convention

Jehovah's Witnesses will be knocking on doors in Brockville starting today and for the next three weeks to give every household a personal invitation to a major convention being held in Cornwall's Civic Complex in June. The "Deliverance at Hand" conventions will be held all over the world in 2006 and 2007, and 98,000 congregations of Witnesses worldwide will be inviting their fellow citizens as well. All sessions are open to the public. In addition to a dramatic presentation that will highlight what loyalty to God really means, there will be sessions on how to attain a happy family life and how young people can resist the temptations of immoral conduct. Why the concerted effort to advertise the convention program this year? The Witnesses believe that mankind sorely needs deliverance from the effects of inherited sin and feel only God can bring about that kind of deliverance. During the convention, Jesus' role in delivering mankind will be examined and various Bible accounts of deliverance will be reviewed. There will be special focus on passages describing the hope of survival during God's fast-approaching day of reckoning The two Brockville congregations will attend the Cornwall convention June 16-18 at the centre at 100 Water Street.

A big "yeah right". That was the hook that got me in 1970. After 21 years of WT brainwashing w/their interpretation of the Bible, I could see that family lives REALLY were not happier nor lives in general.

People were tired. They were robotic. They were backbiters. They were hypocritical.

But they put on the front that was expected of good Witnesses. A lot suffered in silence.

Their former friends were lost. Family members who weren't JWs had limited or no contact w/them. All they had were fellow members of the org. who thought alike.

I could go on......... but will spare all of you. I'm tired.

    Everyone have a good weekend.

The week went by pretty uneventfully; the only thing of note to report is that
the Jehovah's Witnesses are having a huge convention at the O'Connell Center, so
parking was a total bitch this morning. Also, it's so odd to see a bunch of ...

    "Additional Event Information:

The O'Connell Center will be hosting the JW Convention on May 25-26. The

convention will attract approximately 7500 attendees for each of the

three days and will have a direct economic impact to the local community

    of $2.2 million dollars.

We anticipate hosting three or four conventions per year over the next

four years during the summer timeframe, all of which will not conflict

with the first week of fall classes. The total estimated direct economic

impact for these conventions over the five years to the local community

will be $39 million dollars, which in turn has a positive indirect

    impact to our University."

They are apparently proud enough of themselves that they felt it necessary to put that out on the traffic and parking mailing list.

    Hmmmmmmmmmm.............

The talk entitled "Searching into the deep things of God" has me a bit curious as to what they will say! Beings it is the deep searching into the BIBLE that has actually got most of us out! "Searching into the deep things of the Society" is what it most likely should be called. And even then you better be careful how far you dig there!! Better hope you don't have any questions if you do, do deep research!!
