Recovery 101 - a possibility?

I was sitting in the ER this evening trying to distract myself by reading Captive Hearts Captive Minds. There is some great information in the book that is helpful to those trying to recover from living in and leaving a cult. I just kept seeing one great topic after another that we could use in here.

I was wondering how we could use the information at JWD to help people make their recovery a consious effort rather than just letting time to hopefully do the work.

I was thinking that once a week I could post a topic and people could post their thoughts about it or just do the exercise on their own and maybe just post what they are comfortable sharing. Once we have a few of them people can go back and forth as the topic affects their lives. New people can always join in whenever they want and still benefit from it.

I could put the links to all the parts in the Best of so people can find them easily.

Some weeks would just be a discussion but as we go along there are exercises the book suggests.

    Some of the chapters are:

    • The Cult Phenomenon
      • Cults and cultic relationships
      • Seduction and recruitment
      • Understanding thought reform
      • Individual differences affecting recovery
      • Characteristics of a cult leader
    • The Healing Process
      • Taking back your mind
      • Undoing the damage
      • Coping with emotions (this one alone will be more than 1 week)
      • Rebuilding a life
      • Facing the challenges of the future
      • Healing from sexual abuse and violence
      • Making Progress by taking action
    • Special concerns
      • Children in cults
      • Therapeutic issues

    Would anyone be interested?

Any ideas how this would work?

What do you think are problems from trying it out?

That is an odd price. The back of mine still has the sticker on it. I paid $21.95 CAN. for a softcover book. Check the Hunter House publisher and see how much they are asking for it.

For the work here I will post excerpts so if people don't have or can't get a copy it won't matter too much

    what liability?

It's self help. People can choose do one, or some, or none. They don't even have to post if they don't want to.

And I will post some warnings and precautions for people to be aware of.

I just checked on Freemind and they don't have it and Amazon.com was $40-42!!! robbery

If you really want the book go to your local book store and ask them to special order it for you. It should cost just the cover price and not the robbery price

Lady, this is a nice idea. I think it would be helpful to lots of ppl as well as highly emotional. In my work as a (former) therapist, my experience was they needed to take it slowly....see how it goes but I'm betting you'll start the first thread and it will get 100+ responses and will be active for well over a week. There may need to be a digestion period b4 moving onto the next topic.

To all, I wrote an emotional recovery book after treating ex-jws, and it is inexpensive, FYI: www.lulu.com/ex-jw
