Maxwell, Convicted Child Molester & Jehovah's Witnesses Elder
BBC - August 14, 2000 A sheriff's decision not to jail a 60-year-old paedophile has provoked a public outcry on the island of Harris where the man is now living. Thomas Maxwell, a Jehovah's Witness for more than 30 years, was sentenced to three years probation and 240 hours community service for sex offences against a 12-year-old. His name will also be added to the sex offenders' register. At Alloa Sheriff Court, Sheriff William Reid said his decision not to impose a prison sentence had been influenced by Maxwell's voluntary exile to a remote part of the Western Isles. But the residents of Leverburgh in Harris where Maxwell is now living are outraged.

Click on the image to view an enlargement and the banners. This is the scene that greeted the authorities. As you can see this is a surprisingly large croud for such a small village. The crowd consisted of children, grand-children, mothers & fathers, grand-parents, representatives of other areas within the islands, other members of the Leverburgh Community and members of the media. Click on immage to view and enlargement we have covered the faces of the children for their safety! Something we would not have considered necessary prior to the annuoncement that Maxwell is to be housed here !!!!!!!!!!!!. Below is a collection of images of a small proportion of the many banners. As you can see these have been made very much on the spare of the moment, as the Leverburgh Community was not notified by anyone about the rehousing of Maxwell - not even his elderly nextdoor neighbours. We only found out a few days ago when somebody spotted the Council moving in his furniture that they have apparently had in storage for him since his imprisonment - why were we not informed earlier ?While the meeting took place the crowd waited patiently for news. Over the next couple of hours the media recorded various statements from members of the crowd. People stood around patiently and behaved extremely well but as the main topic of conversation was inevitably Maxwell tensions were rising. Various placards were placed around the entrance of the Hall. Something these ordinary, law abiding citizens would not have even considered themselves capable of only a few days ago. Directly in front of the door was a banner placed on a cage containing a doll - graphically portraying the image that while our children will have to remain "caged" in their own homes the paedophile Maxwell is allowed to roam freely - why? Many people found that the meeting went on far longer than expected. Many saw this as a promising sign that the plight of the Leverburgh Community was being seriously considered. Eventually the leader of the South Harris Community Association emerged to explain to the crowd that they had been told that there was NOTHING that could be done! The disgust of the crowd was immediately obvious. Although much was done to try to ease tensions the fact that the Authorities refused to answer any questions aggravated an already very tense atmosphere. Below is a group of images that show the Authorities as they left the building:

[Sheriff Reid said to Maxwell "It is better for the community that you be kept under prolonged supervision".
