Some diners are good tippers. Others view tipping as optional. I knew some JW's that would not tip. I would not dine with them and I always told them why. Some people are very demanding toward the waitstaff. When a Witness is at an assembly area and dines out with their "badge", they serve notice to the "world" that they are cheap or bothersome. I never wore my "badge" when I went out. Why would I want to be shabbily treated out in public???

True, Minimus.

Fact is my tips were my income.  The base pay didnt even represent a living wage.  I actually offered to work for just tips.  The manager just couldnt conceive of this.  My mom had worked as a waitress in the 30s and 40s and had worked for tips only.  She taught me a lot about the work.  I used my time as a waiter to train myself in the psychology of dealing with the public.

As a result of this, I have prided myself on being able to deal with just about anyone.

As for tips, I am convinced that it means to insure prompt service.  I ALWAYS tip.  But adjust it so suit the server.  One thing I learned is that you cant take it out on your customers if you are having a bad day.  Really good thing to know!

One thing I hate about my country is that here, there is very little concept of customer service.  That is to say, Mexican to Mexican, there is precious little.  We have a lot to learn from Americans in this regard.  We have even more to learn from the Japanese.  Customer service is an art form there.
