How Active was the WT in the UN?

The Watchtower claims that it became a NCO recognized by the UN
in order that they could use the UN library for research.

But, the NGOs have to fullfill yearly requirements promoting
UN ideals, this the WT did by publishing articles in the AWAKE!

But, the question is, How active was the WT in UN activities?
Did they attend and participate in meetings, forums? Did they
make petitions? Did they get involved?

If the answer is "No" then the library card defense may stand up.
If not, then the "library card" defense will go up as a bunch
    of hot gas!

The library card excuse is poor indeed. What if a rank and file JW went and got a UN library card? How long before they found the back door of the Kingdom Hall? Also, if getting a library card is innocent, why did the WT resign from the UN 2 days after being exposed? Hypocrites indeed!

They were very active. To convince yourself go to google.com and type in Judah K Schroeder and another key word, say, Jehovah's. He represented the Watchtower Society for example by sitting on a lot of the Human Rights Committes of the U.N. I haven't researched it but yes the Awake mentions the WHO (World Health Organization) which is another UN arm frequently.

It or some other arm may have been assisting JWs who went from Malawi to other countries, thus freeing the Watchtower Society from having to shell out a lot of money to help their own when in need of food, medicine, tents. You might talk with Hawkaw for further leads. Should be an interesting research topic, so keep us posted.

The problem is not that the WTS utilized the UN's resources including those dealing with political issues like refugees so much as it is that it hid this from the rank-and-file while condemning the UN as the anti-Christ beast of Revelation.

    Maximus:

... That means trotting to libraries, where you have to get a card--even the UN.

Bet you a gazillion they just weren't thinking about the implications of what they did. My point was, If you are at the top you can do many things with impunity, and without giving it a second thought as to propriety.

I disagree and take issue with your twice characterization of the Society's joining with the UN as a NGO Partner/Associate as merely being a stupid attempt to gain a "UN Library Card", with the implications of such being unforeseen or at least minimized.

The evidence clearly points to the fact that the Society developed a strategy in the late 1980s to seek out friendships and partnerships with both Governmental entities and NGOs in an effort to gain favors which would advance the WTS's worldwide corporate goals.

I believe that AIDAFRIQUE was founded in 1990. The French JW Website has several webpages which brag about AIDAFRIQUE'S cooperative activities in Africa with UNHCR throughout the 1990s.

Recent posts here show that the WTS has participated in government hearings relating to "freedom of religion" in at least the U.S. and Australia.

Recent posts here also show that the WTS has a cozy relationship with OSCE, HRWF, and other European HR NGOs.

We all know about the WTS's relationship with CESNUR. What many may not know is that its Pres, Massimo Introvigne, is even currently in the process of writing a WTS history book.

The excerpt below shows that the WTS has used its UN NGO status to participate in UN International Conferences, and has gained a good measure of prestige from such.

All this proves that Lloyd Barry DID NOT do this behind the GB's back. Gaining NGO status at the UN was part of an WTS global plan.

For you to characterize the WTS's prostitution with the Beast as simply being a stupid attempt to gain a "UN Library Card" gives the WTS the "OUT" of saying, "As imperfect humans, we simply made a stupid mistake".

NO, this was calculated and deliberate, and we should not Help the WTS to get OUT of this one!!!

United Nations Conference on National Minorities

    Geneva, May 1999

Macedonian Human Rights Movement of Canada

From May 25 - 31, 1999 the Macedonian Human Rights Movement of Canada (MHRMC) attended a conference sponsored by the United Nations Commission On Human Rights, Sub Commission on Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities, Fifth Working Group Session. The conference was held in Geneva, Switzerland, the European headquarters of the United Nations. In addition to the two external delegates of the MHRMC, Spiro Kotsopoulos and Susan Trchaevski, one internal delegate, Father Nikodim Tsarknias, also attended the conference.

Participants at the conference included government delegations from over thirty countries, as well as over fifty Non Governmental Organizations (NGO's) such as the MHRMC. The conference also had a special guest for one of the afternoon sessions, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Mary Robinson. Ms. Robinson gave an oral presentation and responded to questions from the Working Group. The purpose of the conference is to investigate and promote a better understanding between States and minority groups according to the United Nations Declaration on Minority Rights.

The MHRMC was able to voice its concerns, called an intervention, for Macedonian minorities in Greece, Bulgaria and Albania, on two separate occasions for all of the governmental and NGO representatives for the Working Group. Our comments were well received and entered into the official record of the conference. We received congratulations and very positive comments from several of the attending organizations.

In addition to private meetings with representatives of the governmental delegations, we also had numerous meetings with other NGO's in between sessions, including: Watch Tower, a religious organization which has had great success against Greece at the European Court for Human Rights in Strasbourg; the Turkish Association of Graduate Students of Western Thrace; the Christian Solidarity Worldwide Association, who was particularly interested in speaking with Father Tsarknias; a representative of the European Union; and Dr. Jane Cowan, Professor of Social Anthropology at the University of Sussex, England, who is a specialist on the Balkans.

The contacts made at this and other similar conferences are kept up to date on the latest development with regards to the Macedonian minorities by the MHRMC.

By attending such conferences and maintaining contact with the governmental and NGO representatives, as well as interested individuals, the MHRMC hopes to further the struggle for attainment of fundamental human and national rights for Macedonians. If anyone would like more information, please contact the Macedonian Human Rights Movement of Canada at our 24 hour message centre (416) 202-8866, fax (416) 412-3385, e-mail at [email protected], or visit our web site at www.mhrmc.on.ca.

Here is another article which briefly mentions the WTS's participation in a Conference held at the UN headquarters:

    ---------------------------------------------------
    Anti-Discrimination Support Network

    N.G.O. to the United Nations

The Freethought Society of Greater Philadelphia (FSGP) became a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) to the United Nations in 1995 when President Margaret Downey was invited to attend the Freedom of Religion and Belief conference held in London, England. She was one of only 250 people from around the world who were invited to attend the conference and submit reports.

Downey's 1995 report dealt with discrimination against nontheists at the hands of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). The one-hundred-sixty page report was reviewed by the Human Rights Center at the University of Essex for inclusion in the book, Freedom of Religion and Belief--A World Report.

The book is now available in paperback ($31 postpaid). Call H.H. Waldo Booksellers at 800-669-2536 to place an order. Editors, Professor Kevin Boyle and Juliet Sheen, highlighted cases of intolerance towards particular forms of belief throughout the world. On page 162 under the category of "the Americas" readers will find four paragraphs relevant to the issues of discrimination against Atheists and Freethinkers.

Downey's case against the BSA and favorable ruling is highlighted. FSGP and its committee, the Anti-Discrimination Support Network (ADSN) is given credit for working to persuade the BSA to allow children to join without prejudice.

On January 1, 1998, We were notified that Professor Abdelfattah Amor, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Religious Intolerance, would be visiting the U.S. for two weeks. To prepare for his visit, the Rapperteur was soliciting written reports and updates from participating NGO's and their representatives. Downey immediately submitted a two-page update on the Boy Scout discrimination issue staing that the situation had become much worse since the 1995 conference report.

The update described new cases of discrimination in Oregon, Michigan, Maryland and California. The update was trnslated into French and sent to Amor's office in Geneva.

Amor responded to the update with an invitation to participate in a series of public testimony panels on January 28, 1998 at the United Nations building in New York City.

The Council for Secular Humanism's Executive Director, Matt Cherry also received an invitation. Cherry and Downey communicated with each other as they both prepared updates and speeches. They decided that Cherry would present an overview while Downey concentrated on the BSA issue. The january 28 meting opened with a welcome and a statementof pupose from Amor. At the last moment it was dicovered that Cherry was unable to attend. This left Downey as the only spokesperson for the freethought community. Downey was the first speaker on the agenda and she decided to incorporate a portion of Cherry's intended speech with her own.

This is her presentation before the Special Rapportuer, his Commision members and the panel participants.

During the speech, there were gasps and wispers from spectators. Several people who made eye contact with Downey during the presentation had looks of utter astonishment at what she was saying.

They were probably hearing about injustices against the nontheist community for the first time in their lives.

After Downey spoke, Professor Amor commented that he was very sensitive to issues facing nontheists. He acknowledged that nontheist concerns would be reviewed carefully. Baitul Zafar from the Ahmadiyya Movement in Islam was the next speaker. Zafar was obviously moved by Downey's presentation. He appeared to change his introduction to specifically acknowledge the presence of nontheists in America as he nodded a friendly greeting to Downey. Zafar's presentation was a compelling account of how Muslim's are wrongly protrayed and characterized in the media. His concerns about stereotyping were a familiar echo. Atheists fight similar injustices. The next two speakers also made sure to acknowledge the presence of nontheists as they opened their discussions.

Downey's speech had made a differnce with a Jehovah's Witness and a Buddhist presentation. Many people approached Downey after the meeting to express their thanks for enlightening them about the Atheist/nontheist community. The ADSN is dedicated to working until we see an end to discrimination against the non-religious.

Below are numerous links "proving" the "assertion" Mad speaks of that Judah B (not K) Schroeder was actively helping promote the Watchtower Society's agenda as an NGO affiliate with the UN by sitting on various Human Rights Commissions. Further, the WHO, UNESCO etc are additional arms of the UN beyond that of the HRCs and it would be interesting to see if the WTS agenda with those can also be as easily shown by internet documentation:

P.S. Mad, I do not accept your calling me Jahidiot, jahnuts and the like. You appear very knowledgeable as shown in your posting about the WTS's interrelationship with the UN's religious tolerance concerns including free speach by atheists. Are you a member of an atheists for free speech type group by any chance?
