Is it possible to get a Wii out here in the States. We went to three stores and they were all sold out. I bought Manhunt, but discovered the US games are not compatible with UK consoles. Grrrrr!

As for your cousin's anecdote about multiple failures, it seems he has had some unusual bad luck. I game with about nine different Xbox 360 owners. Between us, three have had the RRoD, which is directly in keeping with MS' numbers. Of those, all were prior to the new 65nm chips and new heatsinks. Of the three of us that had failures, none have had any issues with our replacements. Of my friends that have the new 65nm chips, not one has failed. The falcon chips are suffering the same failure rats not surprising seeing as that wasn't the reported problem the soldering was the problem. http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/2008/01/21/rumor-the-real-reason-for-the-rrod-revealed/Rumor: the real reason for the RROD revealed![]() You may recall when Bungie leaving Microsoft was only a rumor. You may also recall most of the internet calling the source of this rumor as crazy. You may also also recall that the source was soon vindicated while the rest of the internet (including us) were made to look like gibbering idiots. All of this recalling is being done in order to reveal the following: the same site -- 8Bit Joystick -- is now reporting that an inside source at Microsoft has uncovered the ultimate reason behind the Xbox 360's egregiously high failure rate. The truth behind the Red Ring of Death, says the anonymous source, is that Microsoft rushed the Xbox 360 in order to beat Sony's Playstation 3 to market. This ambition led to lackluster quality assurance and not nearly enough product testing, and the result -- as many 360 gamers will tell you - was disastrous. Furthermore, the source notes that there is no single culprit for failures, but rather a group of faults that can lead to an RROD. Whether it be substandard heat sinks, bad solder joints, or even bad chips, a myriad of issues can lead to hardware failure. Is it all true? It's certainly not out of the question that MS may have rushed the 360 in order to beat Sony. After all, even with the 360's very real hardware issues, it currently enjoys a healthy lead over the Playstation 3. One thing we can be relatively sure of: Microsoft isn't about to confirm the veracity of the interview either way.

I'd like to get a 360, but then I'd have to get an HDTV, too, so I've been resisting so far. Those LED DLPs do look nice though....

The falcon chips are suffering the same failure rats not surprising seeing as that wasn't the reported problem the soldering was the problem. Where did you get that the current chips have the same failure rate? I read that article you linked to back in January when it came out. Nowhere does it say that. On the contrary, the article xbox360fanboy is quoting says: It's around 30%, and all will probably fail early. This quarter they are expecting 1 M failures, most of those Xenons. Xenons meaning launch units. It goes on to say: Q: How much more reliable are the current generation of Xbox 360 than the previous designs? Original Xenon, Zypher and Falcon. I've heard that the failure rates for the current design is sub 10%. Much much better, but still too high imoh. And those designs haven't seen much life yet, so no one knows if that failure rate will hold. Q: Let's go over some of the rumored reasons RROD. Could you tell how close each theory is? Over heating CPU/GPU due to the lead free solder? They don't overheat due to PB Free. They over heat due to too much power dissipated in too small of an area, w/o a sufficient thermal management design to take the heat away from the junction of the transistors on the chips, the packages themselves, and the mobo. And the over heating is on the GPU. When the CPU heatsink is applied right, it does not over heat. The main design flaw was the excessive heat on the GPU warping the mother board around it. This would stress the solder joints on the GPU and any bad joints would then fail in early life. Since the old hot GPU has now been replaced with a cooler running GPU, it would follow that the failure rate would be significantly less, which by all accounts has been proved true. Bad soldering is even easier to fix than redesigning the GPU and heatsink, both of which they did, as well as changing the thermal glue.

Yeah, that's the article I pulled my quotes from. That article says that it's mainly launch units that fail, for a variety of reasons, and that the new ones fail far, far less. Did you read it? I agree that they fail more often than they should, but it's now below 10% (according to that article). And in my experience they have been fantastic about replacing them.

Get a PS3 they're far more versatile with bluray capability, flash memory slots and you can use your computer as a media server to your PS and play everything on your computer such as mp3. movie files and pictures And they do look a lot better than the X-box too
