Ozziepost-

"Responsible" - what does that mean? Sounds like "Big Brother" don't you think?

As I understand it, Google ads pay the bills so's we can do what we do. I'm not sure whether it's possible to vet the ads but I'm sure it's impractical.

Who would do it? What criterion would they use? And why?

Surely this smacks of the very control that so many have left.

Freedom means freedom to choose, no matter how looney the choices are

.

Wow that is laughable. So if someone says something that is not part of forum rules or something that you deem fall under the rules do you or other Admins also use such non "big brother" thinking? Nope. No Admin does. So lets not try to make this some great freedom debate. It's about money and that's all. I agree that it's a bit inconvenient to try to divert certain ads, not to mention Simon is probably under contract. I still stand by that people on this board would be more then willing to pay for and maintain this site on a donation basis.

I'm not laughing.

You've missed my point. Determining what would be offensive would employ criteria that are rather subjective. I accept that Simon can make that decision if he wishes, but otherwise.......

Which people? FWIW it didn't work out that way in the past.

Now, in general, I'd agree that Scientology is IMO a wacky cult and has been done much harm by Tom Cruise's promoting of it, but we all make choices in life.

Inquiry man = Money and organised religion are synonmous!

Otherwise they would not exist.

When JWs state they are not making money it is the same as them saying they are the numero uno on Earth! A blatent lie that you believe to become one!

Let me just let you know Ozzie I wasn't trying to be smarmy really...it's just that it's obviously a money/contract issue. If the Admins/Simon had control over which ads would appear I hardly doubt that the "big brother" excuse would be used. In fact it's really not our business what Simon decides to do since it is his messageboard.

You've missed my point. Determining what would be offensive would employ criteria that are rather subjective.

Isn't this the job of a forum Admin? To determine what is offensive? I have been an Admin for a messageboard before. There is no strict criteria that you go by, and generally you can enforce your own rules if you like (not saying you do) it's pretty much all subjective on a messageboard. Heck I had a topic killed in Adult/Heated because it was sexually themed.

As for the whole money issue, I was on a board that garnered close to as much traffic and we managed to keep it up for 3 years all on Donations. If this board couldn't garner the money, then well that is just extremely sad. How much money are we looking at for unlimited bandwidth on a messageboard? 2,000 or 3,000 at the most. People gave Trevor and others probably just as much and they really had no attachment to these people. I know it is up to debate as to if people would give or not, but I just can't see the nice people on here letting this board close down.

Ads are part of internet life. Just like on television, it's up to the viewer to click or no. Personally, I've tuned them out. If you want to support Simon and this site, and improve the calibre of the ads that show up, click on the great ones that advertise good products. Ignore the rest. Google will get the hint over time.

I don't want Simon dependent on donations from nice people.

I seem to be seeing more and more Scientology crap here. "Knowing how to know."

I don't mean to whine, and I accept the decisions of the people responsible for this site. Just wondered if it was possible to stop them appearing without losing out financially as a result.
