A banner advert on the right here at JWD is for Scientology and takes you here: http://www.scientology.org/index.html?gclid=CKfB7Kyj0ZICFQhE1AodKyPVGg

They're sneaky and all over, no? I just watched the South Park episode last night about Scientology, the Closet one with Tom Cruise.

I checked it out (it does no harm except to run up their bills and support this forum). However, I would be extremely careful about joining or accepting any products from the Church of Scientology. Better to cross-reference those things before getting something that is not going to work, or is going to target you as a potential member of Scientology. No need to leave one cult only to get dragged into another, equally difficult to leave, one.

It's just google ads, that's all. Ignore them and they eventually go away.

It just concerns me that people who may be in a confused state here visiting this forum don't need to have cult adverts shown to them. Out of the frying pan into the fire, as it were. And if it's possible to stop their ads showing here, it seems only responsible to do so. Just thought I'd mention it anyway.

Interestingly, my mother met my father in the Scientology cult. She later left both the cult and my father, and became a JW down to this day. So leaving one cult can easily lead to another. xJW's BE AWARE!!!!

I agree that it would be nice to make this a "no cult zone." Is it possible to ban them from advertising here?

Hmm. If you watch the subsequent videos, Scientology basically looks like a psyco-babble self-help dealio. I'm still watching because I want to hear the details about the spaceship etc. ![]()

And if it's possible to stop their ads showing here, it seems only responsible to do so. "Responsible" - what does that mean? Sounds like "Big Brother" don't you think? As I understand it, Google ads pay the bills so's we can do what we do. I'm not sure whether it's possible to vet the ads but I'm sure it's impractical. Who would do it? What criterion would they use? And why? Surely this smacks of the very control that so many have left. Freedom means freedom to choose, no matter how looney the choices are.

ozziepost,
Thanks for the reply. Freedom, yes. I would suggest that you should also have the freedom to choose what adverts appear here. Although responsible can mean 'in control of' I had in mind what 5b from Chambers says: 5 said of a person: a) able to be trusted; b) able to answer for one's own conduct; capable of rational and socially acceptable behaviour Society now has a large amount of knowledge and combined experience of cults. To completely ignore those in our decisions is a mistake. But this is just what I think, and we're free to disagree. :)

To the people saying that the ads can't be controlled: Google Adsense does have filter controls so you can block certain ads from appearing when Google looks through the content of a page...as for someone mistakenly going to the Scientology sites...well, if you are gullible enough to leave the Watchtower and go into another cult that quick then I feel for you.

In Norway, there has been wide press coverage on the suicide of a young girl, who happened to be the dauther of a member of parliament. She allegedly committed suicide after receiving a very negative result on a personality test performed by the Scientology Church in Nice.
Yesterday, there was a tv programme featuring this topic. However, Jehovahs´s witnesses were given just as broad TV coverage, showing glimpses from an international assembly, an interview with an ex-JW and a telephone call from a viewer with a JW question..
What I did not like, however, was that JWs were portrayed as a money making machine. I do agree that this label might fit the Scientology church, but a lot of statements could be made about the JW, but I do not think money would be my first target.I would have stressed shunning, disfellowshipping etc etc.
Also featured in the programme was a newspaper article based on the infamous Watchtower article that one should hate the "apostate" ones with a perfect hatred.
In the beginning it was stated that the group with the highest suicide rate was Jehovahs witnesses.
In this country, JWs are partly financially supported by the state, whereas the Scientology church is denied such support, much to the dismay of that church.
JWs rank among the ten largest religios groups.

It would be nice to have REAL choices from which to choose.
Scientology was a fake religion/con from the beginning. Junk speculation from the mind of a science fiction writer who wanted to become wealthy. I am tired of seeing ads for phony distractions which are a worthless waste of one's time, energy and $$$$. --VM44

Im pretty sure they are targeting all anti-cult sites with these, any anti-scientology site with google ads are getting these as well. Google are such unethical scum, they have been actively deleting scientology critics from youtube as well because of their new great customer who buys thousands of google ads and youtube ads. Whats next google? Maybe you can sell some banner ads for pedos on popular kids sites so they can find more kids to molest?
