MochaLattePosts With Audio That Opens Automatically May Not Be a Good Idea


I've opened some topics and within a few seconds there's audio on the topic. My husband is also an ex-JW who knows that I frequent this site. I'm concerned that those with Witness family members who don't approve of websites such as these may be alerted to this when an unsuspecting person opens up a topic to read privately and the volume is turned up on his computer. Just a thought, for the sake of discretion I think the reader should be given the option of opening an audio file, it shouldn't open on its own when you click on the topic.

IP SEC thanks for the link, I thought the issue had probably been brought up before. I opened the link and had a good laugh.
German XJW, you're right about those reading the site at work.

I guess the only way to safely read in private is to mute the sound. I don't know how to stop the audio otherwise, without backing out of the topic.

My oldest son (a computer programmer) told me about an email that is going around.  When you open it a very loud voice yells "Hey, we're looking at porn here!"  Yet another good reason to keep the speakers off if you aren't sure what you're opening.

I have two suggestions: one is to use ear phones and the other is to turn your volume down. Not everyone will see this thread. And really, it's our own personal responsibility to make sure our volume is appropriate for work or to be aware of spouses, etc. Websites with sounds, e-mails with sounds and all sorts of  other sounds happen unexpectedly

I started out with AOL for an internet service.  I got shocked by "You Got Mail" (really loud) so many times that I learned to turn the speakers down before signing on just like Pavlov's dogs!

I agree with this youtube and audio sound included being disallowed or blocked. Not everyone has broadband and these antics are not helpful for people fading or surfing in secret.

I agree, and that's my concern.

I don't mind pages without sound embedded, but if you embed a page, please put a link to it as well in case we want to bookmark or send the link to someone else.

If it's got noise, please just post a link.

An alternate suggestion would be to provide some kind of a warning that there is audio that will open automatically as a courtesy to those who might click onto the post.  This could be done in several ways, the easiest being an icon that indicates that the post has audio that will open automatically upon clicking onto the post.  This could be set up so the icon would go to the table of contents page regardless of where the audio is located on the thread.  Or, there could be a color code so that the page number with the audio would be a different color (if it is just one page, it would also be color coded).

Doing that would give people fair warning that, if they click onto the page, it will start playing something with audio.  This will give people a chance to lower the volume or mute it, or not click on the page.  It would also preserve the right for people to include such material (so long as the audio and/or video do not contain objectionable material) that is pertinent to the post topic.

I HATE embedded Youtubes. 99% of the time it's some crap that I don't want to see or hear. I do browse with sound on, because I've usually got something funky playing in the background...and then this CRAP ruins the good stuff.

I'm this close to reaching through the monitor and strangling whoever does this crap next.

I find them annoying when I'm out and about with my notebook. I use my mobile phone to connect to here which is charged per how much data I download. Even when you stop the YouTube video from playing, the thing is still downloading. Sends my data charges upwards and there is no way you can stop it other than closing the page and not reading the comments others have posted.
