edward612Canon vs. Sony?

I'm planning on buying a budget $700 of slr camera. I don't want to spend more. so I have been looking around at different forums and suggestions from cnet and it just seems more people lean towards canon's cameras?
Canon EOS Rebel XTi
Sony Alpha DSLR-A100
Let me know what you guys think . . . any suggestion as to which camera to get would be really helpful and appreciated . . . Thanks

Test them in the store.

Compare the auto focus speed.

Compare the time between pressing the button to shutter opening.

Compare the time it takes to take two pictures.

My Sony Cybershot is slow on all three.

Canon make great cameras.

Sony just like to make money and lock you into proprietary batteries, memory and everything else.

I would go with Canon.

I'm not a fan of Sony at all. High priced junk imo. I would get the Canon.

Good call Simon. Sony's great if you're committed to a suite of Sony products. But Imaging is not their core competency. Canon has been in the imaging business for years.

I'd go with Canon.  They seem so much more user friendly in my experience as well.

I wish I was on this forum when I bought my camera.

UnConfusedRe: Canon vs. Sony?
Here is something important to consider.

Lens and image stabilization. With Canon that technology is built into the lens, making them very expensive.

In the Sony, it's built into the camera, thus the same quality is much cheaper.

That being said I own a Canon and love it, but if I had to do it over again I'd go Sony - a friend has one and it's a wonderful camera.

I have a Canon 20D and I really like it. I think the glass is a higher quality than sony. Actually, I was all set up to by a Minolta (since my film SLR is a Minolta) but they sold to Sony like the DAY I was buying and I changed my mind to the Canon because I didn't know what that would mean in terms of the Minolta's future.

I have also been really impressed with Fuji dslr's, but since it has been awhile I'm not sure where they are in price range.

I'm with JK666 on this one. Test shoot a Nikon SLR. I love mine.

Between the Canon and the Sony I would choose the Canon , primarily on the fact on further attachments and lens etc.

And I would purchase it from a professional camera shop, rather than a big box store, they can give you much more quality service

the staff are more knowledgeable on equipment.

A good web site that has a lot of reviews on camera is this one and you can compare actual photos from different cameras.

Here is also a good write up on that Canon your thinking about,

I have been into photography for a while and so has Cannon. Cannon makes cameras and optics period (well printers and copiers too but that has to do with a logical evolutionary step of film developing and optics)

Sony just makes electronics for the most part it just so happens that digital cameras are consdered electronics or else Sony wouldn't bother with making them.

I was going to ask about Nikon as well. My closest friend adores hers. The D50 is really inexpensive and has awesome jpeg compression. I like Nikon, and especially if you don't want to deal with much post processing- it can have some really beautiful color right from the camera. it is all preference and likings though, I'm not sure one trumps another. (nikon/canon)

I own a Nikon D80 and I love it. Are you planning to do this as a hobby? With Canon or Nikon, you can't go wrong. The important thing is to get good lenses and perhaps a dedicated flash. Both Canon and Nikon have creative flash features that allow you to trigger your flash off camera using infared light from the on-camera flash, it makes a big difference on how the picture looks. Check with the camera model to be sure.

Heck I got a peice o' junk Canon my mom got at a yard sale for a dollar ( the owner though it didn't work) and it's better than a new SONY.

PS My dad hit on the side real quick at it suddenly started working fine. It was a $200 dollar Digital Camera new at Walmart.
