cultswatterThe search function is very lame!!!

The search function is pure crap!!!!

If you enter the words:

january 2008

the search engine will do an "OR" search which is totally useless . The search engine should be doing an "AND" search by default

At present, the search engine is finding any post that contains the words  january OR 2008 :. Totally stupid!

Please fix

And if you identify a post you previously submitted in order to return to the thread, there is no way of clicking a link to it. This site is very busy but not so interactive as it should be in my view - maybe it would be more so if that were the case. I'm no expert but one does need a course on how to utilize the options on this forum - trial and error doesn't get you far!

I was having trouble finding certain posts and then just thought I would test it out.  I tried searching for the word "Jehovah" within the last year and nothing came up.  I tried again later and there were lots of hits.   I think it may just be an intermittent problem.

I had the same problem as cultswatter.  In addition, What if I want to see all of the 150 hits, I am only able to access 50 of them.  What are we doing wrong?  I have tried using comma's.

I just tried "january 2008" in quotes and got back only 28 hits, with just those two words in them. However, it is apparently only that phrase. I got "january of 2008" and "january - 2008" as well, so maybe it does a little "close-enough" checking?

I'm not sure it's fair to use the "L" word, let alone in conjunction with the "V" word for it. Simon worked long and hard to make it available as it stands. Suggestions are reasonable, but keep in mind he wrote this puppy himself -- it's not a purchased package.

"quotes"    See that is the type of suggestions I was looking for!!!   What else can I do?   On ebay, I can omit words that I don't want.  What can I do with this search besides quotes, which I will go and try, right now.   Thanks

OK, try this one on for size. If you separate words with "&&" (double ampersand) it will work like "AND". So you can enter: January && 2008

and it will return posts that have both "January" and "2008" somewhere in them.

I just found this one playing around, there may be other tricks. If you find them, please share!

Yes, the search function is different but with the exception of the lag of some 100 days, I find that it is quite powerful. Yes, your observation that two separate strings are considered to have an OR operator between them instead of the popular AND on other search engines.  You'll find that plus other tips in this thread.

I didn't even know it was up! I've just been using the advanced search in google.

SimonRe: The search function is very lame!!!

There are a lot of things you can do with the search (like certain words within a certain distance of others) but I've been concentrating on getting the indexing done for now and to be honest, 99% of people just put in words (like in google) and the posts that have the most number of those words come up top.

The index has been rebuilding over the weekend and is not uptodate. I'm going to set it to refresh approximately every hour.

I thought it sucked too, 'til I learned how to use it. Now I think it's fine,  and know that it was the eejit behind the keyboard...
