mrsjones5I love my parents but...

sometimes I wonder why I even try.  Hubby just told me that my father and mother accused me of stealing a mug from their house when I visited them in October of last year.

My parents sent that mug to me in a box along with some other stuff when they moved to their current house close to four years ago.  My husband knew this and defended me quite nicely but they took the mug with them when they left.  I don't care about the mug cuz it wasn't my favorite and I hardly used it anyway, it just that they said something like that to my husband.  I won't say anything to my parents, it's just another thing to file away (believe me the list is very long) as reason not to move back to California any time soon.

I moved across the country to get some freedom and improve our relationship. It estranged my mom from me but I feel better anyway.

You should have someone prank call them pretending to be the police. The police need to know your whereabouts because you are highly suspected of being the ringleader of a Mexican mug heisting cartel. You are considered armed and dangerous and anyone with any information should contact the cops immediately. Make sure the prankster includes the story about how you rolled an old woman in her apartment, stole all of her mugs and even some ceramic cat figurines she made while she was in a convalescent hospital.

I don't know how old your parents are but I know from my own experience with my own parents and myself as I age we get so forgetful.  Sadly my parents did that to me when they were in their 80's giving me stuff then saying I took it.  It is senility at it's best and the fact our memories don't work all that well.  I've found myself doing it to my kids and I'm in my mid to late 50's.  So try to be understanding they may be just forgetting and honestly don't remember.  If they are suspicious by nature it will only get worse as time goes on and they age.

My grandmother lived to be 106.  When she was in her late 90s, she started accusing people of stealing things.  She swore up and down that my aunt stole a ruby ring from her.  For weeks, that's all she talked about.  We found the ring in the bottom of a trunk long after she died.  Old people get weird.  If I ever start accusing people of stealing toilet paper, just shoot me.

So sorry you are having to deal with such treatment...

My parents haven't gotten to that stage yet.  So if that had happen to me, I would have to call them on it and ask,  "What the Heck...?"

I am sure they will get there soon tho, since they are both in their seventies,  I dread that.

Years ago, I bought some stuff at my mother-in-laws house.

Later she was at my house and saw the old butter churn I had bought.  She accused me of stealing it, and took it back.

A few months later she gave it to me....she said since I liked it so much.  (whatever)  I still have it though

sorry about the upset, mate.... it really could be a function of aging more than any personal attack against your integrity

my grandmother, by then in mid-90's, had my brother, who was her caretaker, escort me and my husband out of her house after a visit, to be "sure they dont steal anything".....

for the record, she was one of those "hoarders" and the laugh was " how on earth would she ever even KNOW if something went missing!!??  Sideways Frown

California isn't that great.  I think Indiana has tons of potential.  I'll be passing through there on my road trip.  I'll bring you a mug.  I love mugs.

You know what you just said sings so much to my soul about so many family - as well as past associates!

Some people just want to cast aspurtions about anything! And how can you ever feel a close bond to ones who have such an attitude to you?

It's painfull and utterly demeaning. After years of it the danger is your complaints almost make you feel your beginning to sound like them - how ironical? But I see the difference is you're defending your own station and good for you!

I tend to trust till I have no mugs left and be glad everyone liked them so much! And then gawp as I hear criticisms about the quality of china I buy! lol - so near the truth believe me - and has me defending why I bought what I did - crazy!!

Sad to hear your story and I can guess it rings true in so many areas of interaction you have with them and whomever they have as friends?

Pity those of us in the world with such tolerant, trusting and loving personas cant be around each other much more.

I would have replied earlier but I've been running folks, went to Chicago with my daughter's class on Friday.  Then went camping with my daughter's girlscout troop Saturday and Sunday.  Yep I'm worn out.  But I'll be posting pics soon, got some good shots.

Thanks for all the replies and well meaning thoughts to give my parents the benefit of doubt because of their ages (Mom 64, Dad 67) but the way they treat me and my family is an ongoing issue starting from before I married my husband.  The mug thing is just another drop in the bucket of slights and meanness coming from my parents.   I could say more but I think I will start another topic.  As it stands now we may not be going out to California but we might have other things in the works for the kids...has anyone been to Cedar Point?

Until we moved about 45 miles away from my in-laws, my FIL would come to our house and claim something was his. Every time! Now we have our garage and they have theirs, and never two shall meet.

My mum came into our home whilst my wife was in hospital after having our first child, she cleaned through the whole house and threw anything way she thought we no longer needed. She meant well and i miss her

MrsJones, I'm sorry but I am on your parents side, you look like the type that goes around stealing mugs, if anyone ever has Mrsjones over for coffee or tea make sure you get your mug back, she will take it. The worse part of all she has tricked her poor husband into her mug stealing ways. Poor misguided Mrjones. ha ha ha my mom is nuts too.
