I was appointed in my twenties too...Did not know much more than I had read in the books.. I buckled down and learned the hard way . It was not unusual. some remain others drop out later (Of course it is the Holy Spirit that appoints them ) Older ones either bristle at them or treat them benevolently ..BTW they always quote the Bible example of Timothy .
