Berta L. Peale's Newspaper Obituary

  I posted a few weeks ago in Farkel's thread, " Rutherford Exposed" that I would try to get Berta's obituary notice as published in the newspaper.

  Well, it arrived in the mail today, and here it is:

  PEALE, Berta L. Memorial service Monday 7:00 p.m. May 21. Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. 1608 Pacific Ave.

  That's is all. No mention of any husband, childern or other surviving relatives. No mention of any occupation, or life achievement, just that a memorial service will be held at a Kingdom Hall!

  Depressing.

  Thanks VM. Lady Lee, a vacuum, indeed. No mention at all that she still had a living fleshly sister, Rae Eggers, in nearby Huntington Beach, CA; or another sister, Loena, still surviving in Tallmadge, Ohio.

  Note also, no age is given for Berta either. It is as if someone who didn't know anything at all about Berta just phoned the newspaper to tell them she died, and a service will be held at a certain date at the Kingdom Hall. I hope the same person who contacted the newspaper didn't give the memorial talk! Double Depressing! --VM44

  Pretty dismal. Well, she would've been 71 1/2 years old when she died (October 1901 - May 1973).

  Is it a coincidence that an Egger family was the next-door neighbors of Berta Teel in Akron, Ohio, in 1920? BTW, I just reexamined the 1920 data and discovered that another family was living in the same residence with the Teels, that of Hugh T. Skitty and Virginia V. Skitty. Anything known of their relationship with the Teels?

  It is no coincedence at all. Leona as my wife spelled or Lona as we called her was married to an Eggers. Their two children were Jack and Sue. Jack fought in WWII and was never considered a Witness. Once my wife and I visited him. Even though he was not a Witness, he never celebrated Christmas out of respect for his mother. He told me, that if you don't believe it any more, then my all means, join in the celebration. It was good advice, and it almost lead to my disfellowshiping, but we left town before they got around to it ................................................I have no knowledge about the Skitty family. ----------------------------------------------------- Sue was a kind and gentle person, as were all in the family. She was very intelligent, as were all in the family. She was very pretty. She was a high school cheerleader back in her day. The rules regarding the religion were more relaxed back then.

  Well, this is from the 1920 census, so I guess we're talking about a generation earlier. Berta Teel, her brothers and sisters (including Lona E. Teel), and the Dentons lived with the Skittys at 259 Franz Place, but at 261 Franz Place lived two families: the Eggers, which included Alfred F. Egger, his wife Lonaetta Egger, and daughter Hellen, and the Cronins, with Clark Cronin (brother of Lonaetta) and Laura Cronin (sister of Lonaetta). On this basis, I would guess that Lonaetta Egger's maiden name was Lonaetta Cronin. This is a little weird. You stated that Lona Teel married into the Eggers, and here we have a Lonaetta Egger married to Alfred Egger living next door. But Lonaetta was not the same person as Lona. Lonaetta was 22 years old, married, and born in Ohio. Lona was 16 years old, single, and born in North Carolina. So it looks like the first names are a coincidence. Maybe you might know something about Alfred and his wife. Also, do you know anything about the Cronins?

  Yes indeed, Rae was born in North Carolina as were all of the rest of the family, including my two uncles, my grandfather's sons. The first person born in Ohio, was my mother, Circa, 1922. Denten marrried Carrie. She was shipped off to a mental hospital, when Denton found her over his bed with a knife in her hand. She only got out when she was much older, and her daughter, Audrey took care of her. I only saw her in those later years.
