Do Not Be a Victim of Propaganda!

"A fool will believe anything." —PROVERBS 14:15,

THERE is a difference—a big difference—between education and propaganda. Education shows you how to think. Propaganda tells you what to think. Good educators present all sides of an issue and encourage discussion. Propagandists relentlessly force you to hear their view and discourage discussion. Often their real motives are not apparent. They sift the facts, exploiting the useful ones and concealing the others. They also distort and twist facts, specializing in lies and half-truths. How can you protect yourself from the types of people that the Bible calls "profitless talkers" and "deceivers of the mind"? (Titus 1:10) Once you are familiar with some of their tricks, you are in a better position to evaluate any message or information that comes your way. Here are some ways to do this.

Be selective: A completely open mind could be likened to a pipe that lets just anything flow through it—even sewage. No one wants a mind contaminated with poison

Qualified book 1955

If we have love for Jehovah and for the organization of his people we shall not be suspicious, but shall, as the Bible says, 'believe all things,' all the things that The Watchtower brings out, inasmuch as it has been faithful in giving us a knowledge of God's purposes and guiding us in the way of peace, safety and truth from its inception to this present day.

Put information to the test: "Beloved ones," said John, a first-century Christian teacher, "do not believe every inspired expression, but test the inspired expressions." But it is far better for each individual personally to choose what he will feed his mind. It is said that we are what we eat, and this can apply to food for both the body and the mind. No matter what you are reading or watching or listening to, test to see whether it has propagandistic overtones or is truthful.

Jehovah is not pleased if we receive that food as though it might contain something harmful. We should have confidence in the channel God is using.

Ask questions: As we have seen, there are many today who would like to 'delude us with persuasive arguments.' (Colossians 2:4) Therefore, when we are presented with persuasive arguments, we should ask questions.

How is such independent thinking manifested? A common way is by questioning the counsel that is provided by God's visible organization.

WT Jan 15th 1983

Do not just follow the crowd: If you realize that what everybody thinks is not necessarily correct, you can find the strength to think differently. While it may seem that all others think the same way, does this mean that you should? The command given at Exodus 23:2 serves as a good principle: "You must not follow after the crowd for evil ends."

“We will realize that Jehovah knows what is going on in his organization, and if he is willing to permit it, who are we to insist it should be different? If we really have faith, we will know that if it is wrong he will straighten it out eventually, and we are far safer inside his organization even with these minor difficulties than we would be on the outside where only chaos and destruction await us.”

How true yxl1 ! They will not allow themselves to see the contradictions in their publications.

"There's none so blind as he who will not see."

When Paul said "make sure of ALL things, hold fast to what is fine", who was he speaking to?

A congregation - and in regard to all things they might arrange, do, or believe.

The old Theocrats ignore what the Bible really says.

A friend of mine who drifted away from the Oraganization asked me for some info that would annoy an Elder that is bothering him at work. Apparently, since this Elder has discovered my friend was born into the truth and since faded away, he has decided to use his lunchtimes clocking up his service report by annoying my friend. Dont worry. He has no friends or family who are still witness.

Caspian,
So I was either a fool for 36 years of my life or deceived hhmmmmmmm!

In AL words,

You can fool some of the people some of the time,

You can fool all of the people some of the time,

But you can't fool all of the people all of the time.

I guess we belong to the first group

The JUU's remind me of the various news organizations that are all vying for viewership. One claims to the "The One You Can Trust". Another claims to be "Fair and Balanced" and others have their catchy claims to hope that you believe their propaganda. If anyone watches Bill Oriely on Fox, you know how often he claims the "spin stops here". A clever ploy, but unfortunately, he employes techiques that make sure that you go away with the feeling you have the "truth".  Sound familiar?  Anyone that has studied propaganda and has been involved in American partisan politics can spot an abuse of logic in a heartbeat. One thing I will always be thankful to the Society for is for the emersion into control techniques and abuse of logic using fear, name calling and coersion. I can't think of any experiance growing up that was so successful in demonstrating how subtle and blatant one can be in the same sentence.
